How to Run a Charity Golf Outing

Players: Any field, teams of 4

A charity golf outing is a scramble with a mission. The fundraising platforms cover donations and sponsorships; this guide covers the golf: the format, the contests, the pace, and live scoring that keeps the whole field engaged instead of wondering when dinner starts.

Format: the scramble wins, every time

A four-person scramble is the charity default for good reasons: high handicappers contribute, pace stays reasonable, and nobody posts an embarrassing number in front of their boss. Shotgun start so everyone finishes together for the dinner.

Keep the scoring simple, one team score per hole, and add a net division or two flights if the field is competitive enough to care.

Contests that carry the energy

Closest to the pin on every par 3, long drive on two holes (one open, one for seniors or women if your field splits that way), and a putting contest at the turn. Contests give every player a moment that has nothing to do with their team's score.

Mulligan sales and hole sponsorships are the fundraising platform's department; the golf side's job is making sure every contest is marked, measured, and announced at dinner without a scrap of paper going missing.

Live scoring changes the whole day

The single biggest upgrade from a paper-scorecard outing: live scoring every group can enter from a phone, with a public leaderboard sponsors and non-players can watch from the clubhouse or from home, no app, no account. Announce the winners from the board at dinner instead of tabulating cards while the room waits.

Common questions

What format is best for a charity golf outing?

A four-person scramble with a shotgun start. It is fast, friendly to all abilities, and gets the entire field to dinner at the same time.

How many contests should an outing run?

Closest to the pin on every par 3, one or two long drives, and a putting contest is the classic set. Every player should have at least one shot at a prize beyond the team score.

How do you keep scoring from delaying dinner?

Score live from each group's phone instead of collecting cards. The leaderboard is final minutes after the last group finishes, and winners are announced from the board.

Does Skins Golf process donations?

No. Skins Golf runs the golf: formats, live scoring, contests, and public leaderboards. It tracks results for reference only and never handles funds; pair it with your fundraising platform of choice.
