Common questions
What is a skins game in golf?
Every hole is worth one skin. The lowest score on the hole wins it outright; if two or more players tie for low, nobody wins that hole. Whoever collects the most skins wins the game.
How do carryovers work?
When a hole is tied, its skin carries to the next hole, which is then worth two. Ties can stack, so a hole late in the round can be worth three or four skins. That is what makes skins swing.
What is a validation?
A house rule some groups play: after winning a skin, the winner has to validate it, usually by parring or halving the following hole, or the skin is cancelled. Agree on it on the first tee.
Do you play skins gross or net?
Both are common. Net skins applies course-handicap strokes by hole stroke index, which keeps a mixed group competitive. Many groups run gross and net boards at once.
