How to Run a Ryder Cup Style Event

Players: Two teams of 4 to 12

A Ryder Cup style event splits your group into two teams under captains and plays match play sessions, four-ball, alternate shot, and singles, with each match worth a point and halves worth a half. The running team score is what makes a buddies trip feel like the real thing.

Teams and captains

Name two captains and let them draft, or split teams by handicap snake so the sides are balanced. Team identity is the whole point: names, colors, and a trophy that comes back every year.

Eight players over a weekend is the sweet spot for a first cup, but the format scales cleanly from 6 to 24, and to more than two teams if your trip runs three squads.

Sessions and points

The classic trip schedule: four-ball matches on day one, alternate shot or shamble matches on day two morning, and singles to finish. Every match is worth 1 point, a halved match is a half each.

Publish the points table and the clinch number before the first tee. For 8 players over three sessions that is 12 points, so 6.5 wins the cup.

Handicaps and pairings

Play matches at full difference or 90% of the difference in course handicap, off the low player in each match. Captains submit blind pairings each session, then reveal them at dinner. The reveal is half the fun.

Keep every match's status and the team score visible all day. The moment someone can see the cup swinging on the 17th at another course, you have built the real thing.

Common questions

How does Ryder Cup scoring work?

Every match is worth 1 point, and a match that ends all square is a half point to each side. The team reaching a majority of the total points wins the cup.

What formats are played?

The classic mix is four-ball (better ball), foursomes (alternate shot), and singles match play. For friendly trips, a shamble session substitutes well for foursomes.

How do you make the teams fair?

Captains draft in a snake by handicap, or the organizer splits the field so combined handicaps are level. Match handicaps run off the difference between opponents.

How many players do you need?

It works from 6 up. Eight over a weekend, three sessions and 12 points, is the classic buddies trip build; the format also generalizes to three or more teams.
