How to Run a Club Championship

Players: Full field, individual

The club championship crowns the best golfer at the club, usually over two or more rounds of stroke play. Most clubs run a gross champion alongside net flights, so players of every ability have something real to compete for.

Gross and net flights

The overall (gross) champion is the lowest total strokes, no handicap. Net flights apply handicaps and split the field by ability, so a mid-handicapper can win their flight while the scratch players battle for the title.

Multiple rounds reward consistency and make the championship feel like a real test, not a one-day lottery.

Common questions

How does a club championship work?

It is usually multi-round stroke play. The lowest gross total wins the championship, with separate net flights so all abilities can compete.

What are net flights?

Divisions that apply handicaps and group players by ability, each with its own winner, alongside the overall gross champion.
